NEPO BABY OR SNEPO BABY

One very funny thing about Nigerians is our ability to give a very wrong meaning to words or coining out our own word and using that word both in and out of context. A perfect example of this is “ nepo  & lapo babies” (our focus will be on the nepo babies) In Nigeria, a nepo(tism) baby is a child from a VERY RICH, or in better words, a luxurious background. “Nepo baby” has, for a while now being the newest word in Nigerians’ dictionary, with us forgetting what nepotism actually is. A regular Nigerian could, in a layman’s terms, define nepotism as being wealthy. Why? This is because we have misused the word “nepotism” to the extent of taking it out of context. Nepotism in it’s real and original sense, is a case or situation where someone (mostly family or friends) uses their influence to grant you and opportunity or a favor, whether or not you are qualified or befitting of that opportunity.  Take for instance your mum happens to be the one in charge of cooking and sh...

STEADY GRINDING

Before I officially begin the write ups for the year, I want you to do a very brief and quick reflection (maybe after reading this piece). I need you to ask yourself these questions and provide the answers. Have I put the slightest effort in working towards my goals for the next 3 months? Has the year started on a good note for me? With the way things are going, can I achieve up to half of my goals for the next 3 months?  After providing these answers, I want you to understand that chances are high things might not go your way all the time, maybe most times. And even if they do, surely, there would be bad days.  There would be days when you lack even the slightest motivation to work towards your goal(a), days when your schedule doesn’t go as planned, and especially in this part of the world where anything and everything could go wrong all at once and you see yourself fall back from a 100, a 20, a 10 and boom! back to zero. Mind you, this could befall anyone… a student, a busin...

To 2026🥂

You see, I usually laugh to myself when I hear people talk about new year resolutions. It sounds somewhat unserious to me and I’d like us to understand something… so long as nothing extraordinary or supernatural happens to mark a new year, then it’s just another new day we celebrate based on our calculations (the calendar) and if indeed you really need to act upon a new resolution, you really don’t have to wait till “a new year”. But in as much as not everyone would agree with this, I’d like to put you through on how to go about your new year resolution(s): First, IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE BIG: when most people are setting their new year resolutions, they often tend to ignore small goals and aim for way bigger ones, unknowing to them that small wins lead to even bigger ones. When you choose to overlook the small goals, which in some cases, may be stepping stones to achieve your bigger goals, you tend to not achieve the goals you set which would leave you wondering how and why. That is why...

2025 wrapped

I have never had a worse, excruciating, more bitter phase than I’ve had in the last two months. While my days were for thinking in and out of the box for ways I could keep myself in motion, the nights were for silent cries when that realization of futility hits me and also the pain that came with admitting the fact that I was stuck in a cycle I had, or have, rather, the power to change but hadn’t found the strength yet, made me resort to things I never imagined myself to do. Good thing I gathered the courage to open up to the people I felt could put me through life, and thankfully, my guts were not wrong.  “Count your blessings and name them one after the other”, was the response I received from all three of them and then suddenly, I discovered that indeed, God was really there for me all through the year. “2025 is my year” l  I had a crazy character development, to an extent at least  l  I got a job that also aided my development  l  I made 2 new friends I...

FAITH OR LIFE

Sometime ago, I think published an article on religious bondage and I felt fulfilled speaking out on such controversial topic because it really used to piss me off… but up until some days ago, where a woman was trendy due to the fact that she happens to be under the shackles of her belief and her fellow believers. (Story time) Apparently, she had been sick a while ago, and rather than using a medical method to treat herself, she opted for a “traditional” means. This traditional means made her health get worse to the extent of having a very huge sore on her breast. She then decided to come online (on X, formerly twitter) to ask for assistance (medical and maybe financial). Being a person a lot of X users knew, due to the fact she was a real and legit hustler, about 30 million naira was raised for her health issues within 3 days… everyone really wanted her to get out of the sick bed and continue being AUNTY ESTHER.  First of all, protocols had to be observed and a form of cons...

When Peace Becomes A Privilege

Image
I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that we still have the whole of year 2026 and part of 2027 to continue living this way.  While prepping  this piece, I remembered a  song  that was on the lips of almost every Nigerian barely six months into this present government  (video attached beneath). I couldn't help but ask myself, were we really complaining about Mr. B AT  then, if only the future us had seen today, if only our 2023 selves  got a  peep into today to see that the order of the day has become kidnapping and terrorism and it is spreading like a virus at this point. These terrorists are not the regular terrorists, they are the content creator type of terrorists who update the country on their trips and yet we have the military doing nothing but standing by the same dangerous roadsides to collect common 200 Naira from struggling Nigerians who are trying to earn a living from transportation … Stay with me. Can we even talk about th is ...

Hey Dad,

I think I will ask God "why" for the rest of my life. And never will I come to understand it Even if God himself came in front of me to tell me the reason, I don't think I will accept it Some loves are too hard to bear And with great loves come great pain, And with great loss, Comes the greatest pain of all If love could have saved you...  You would've lived for ever I love you and will always miss you. And in my next life and after, I would always want you to be my dad Courtesy: Ify your girl🎀
