Displeasure To Achieve Pleasure!

Displeasing Yourself To Please Yourself?

Yes, I'll call that self discipline. I, personally, am actually a person that feels later consequence pays more than immediate consequence (good or bad). Now, self discipline, in my own simple terms, would be defined as a decision or step taken by one to displease their self for later pleasure.

What do I mean?

A situation where I fight down the whole lot of pressure I get from my friends to smoke and involve myself in all kinds of bad habits will lead me to no other but not getting to have any issues with my lungs, kidney and other organs that could get affected due to taking in toxens (cigarettes and the likes). Another instance could be me figuring out feelings or whatsoever, I may think I have for people at a young teen age and this would leave me with having a right and not wrong insight about love. These and many more could be used as case studies for self discipline.

Though it is not too wrong and at the same time, not alright if one fails to be self disciplined. All you just have to do is take the following steps which are not so easy to scale through whether followed accordingly or not. Bear in mind that these steps can be taken both simultaneously and accordingly depending on the kind of person you are.

* First thing you should do after making the decision of self-discipline, is to IDENTIFY YOUR GOAL. No doubt, we all have flaws we would want to change. Now, identifying this flaw(s) is the major step to take to work on our discipline on it. You can't just wake up a day to become a perfect person and that's why it was earlier stated in this article that depending on the kind of person you are, you can work on yourself either simultaneously or accordingly. When you clarify what you want to work on, you'd be motivated and also be on track all through your journey. The instance we'll be looking at is a young adult who sleeps away all his time instead of starting up something for himself. Now, him coming to this realization is the first step, which is identifying his goal.

* The next thing to do to be self-disciplined is to BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR WEAKNESSES OR LIMITATIONS:After identifying your goal, you should tell yourself the truth about where you are weak to keep up with the journey. Like our case study, him setting alarms at various times of the day (in the morning, afternoon and evening) will keep him woke and not forget his goal i.e to stay woke and not sleep all day.

* PRIORITIZING AND PLANNING : After getting to know your weakness(es) on your discipline journey, one thing to do is setting up a plan. Our case study, for instance, can't just set his alarm 3 times a day only to stay woke and do nothing. The only difference that would make is his closed and opened eyes. Instead, he could start up with a plan of waking up in the morning at the sound of the alarm to do one or two chores, in the afternoon to searching for jobs, either online or maybe thinking of how to develop himself, and in the evening to relax and study about one or two things. This would keep him occupied and reminded of his goal.

* BREAKING DOWN YOUR GOALS INTO SMALLER MANAGEABLE AND REALISTIC ONES : Whether or not your goal is a hectic one, its very normal to feel overwhelmed or pressured at some point and when it gets to this, it is advised to reduce the step or reduce the pace you're working with. Like our instance, of course it would be difficult at first, having to work on himself 7 days a week. Reducing it to 3 days a week for a month or thereabout, could relieve him and motivate him to take it up to maybe 5 days a week in order for him to achieve his intended goal and be balanced for 7 days a week.

* FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER: This could be a very powerful source of motivation to keep you on track in your journey. Employing this step is going to be very helpful. Get someone, maybe a family member or friend who can help you keep track of your progress on your journey.

* GIFT YOURSELF WHEN YOU SEE YOUR PROGRESS: In your journey of self-discipline, you do not necessarily have to deny yourself the joys you receive. However, in my opinion, this solely depends on what you're working on. Disciplining yourself on multiple sex partners or alcoholism wouldn't require this step, well, unless you're gifting yourself something not relating to your flaw🤷‍♀️. For our case study, realizing some progress made on his journey, he could gift himself a day or two break, though depending on his level of progress, and confirmation from his accountability partner.

Self discipline, as earlier stated, is not something so easy to achieve. It's normal to face one or two in your journey but just never give up on it because it can always be achieved if you carefully follow the steps given above, whether accordingly or simultaneously.

Something that came to my mind while on this piece was "with freedom, comes great responsibility"
