DELAYED GRATIFICATION.

 

I will always tell youngsters like me to not be faster than their shadows- I mean, you can but you should not [I don’t know if we understand what I mean]. Between ages 13-18/19, your prior aim should be your personal growth, talents, skills, studies e.t.c. but in whatever you end up focusing on, bothering yourself with the thoughts of how to be in vogue, or how to please a person in the name of a relationship is something that should not be because you are more likely to be distracted from your main focus. For instance, me deliberating on saving up my allowance to get me a laptop or getting me a pair of loafers… My only gain in going for the latter [the pair of loafers] is feeling among and trendy, ignoring or forgetting rather, what it would cost me if I do not get me a laptop soonest. But you know what my gains would be if I went for the former [a laptop]? Not only will I be able to generate the money to get me a pair of loafers but I will also get to feel among one of those girls mistaken to be tech girls- one of the most valued people on earth today right now, far more valued than loafers.

Or is it getting myself a pixie curls wig rather than paying for some materials I will be NEEDING in school… Of what relevance is my pixie curls wig on an empty head? Yes, call me a nerd or whatever but lets see what a nerd has to offer in 10-15 years and what a you has to offer within the same time range- you can always this line as a comeback to whoever tries to make you feel less of yourself.

What am I trying to denote in this piece?

The concept of delayed gratification which the young ones should be made to understand. [POV: we should actually CATCH THEM YOUNG]. Look, the pressure to digress will definitely be there but you giving in to it or not is what would determine you now and later.

I actually am always impressed when I see my very little friends venture into small scale businesses of selling things like perfumes/oil, lip-gloss, scrunchies and even as far as reselling snacks. I can also remember my little sister and I going round our estate to sell the leather key holders we had learnt how to make in school during a particular summer coaching. The only reason we stopped was because we ran out of leather and couldn’t get more because we didn’t know our way to the market. But I still vividly remember the faces of disappointment of our customers when we told them we were out of the market. One more thing I will let you know as a youngster is that when you start up something [like a business] while you are this young, adults would get more interested in you because they want to see what and how your business is and also set you as an example to their children and maybe themselves too.

What you should also always have at the back of your mind is that all these fashion trends will always run out of time and what happens when they do? Of course they go extinct but that knowledge or skill you impact in yourself… they will always be a plus to you.

One mistake you should not make as a young person is to place value on the wrong things: your beauty, your clothes and shoes, your phone e.t.c. Just start with whatever and wherever you are and watch you become what you always dreamed to be.
